No VOC's. Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) are emitted from certain gasses in products. They form ozone, which is an ingredient of smog. These can have short and long term health effects.

HAP Free. HAP stands for Hazardous Air Pollutants. HAP's, focus on hazards to both humans and the environment. It is a much broader term and includes more polluting and harmful chemicals than VOC's.

No VOC's and HAP Free protect indoor air quality. The EPA's "The Total Exposure Assessment Study" found levels of about a dozen pollutants to be 2 to 5 times higher inside homes than outside, regardless of whether the homes were located in rural or highly industrial areas. Health effects may include: eye, nose and throat irritation, headaches, loss of coordination, nausea, damage to liver, kidney and central nervous system. They may worsen the effects of asthma and some organics can cause cancer in animals and some are suspected or known to cause cancer in people.

No added fragrance and dyes. Many added fragrances contain phthalates (fal-ates), which are carcinogenic chemical plasticizers, solvents, and fixatives. Dyes can be derived from petroleum, acetone, and tar or contain impurities like lead acetate, which is toxic to the nervous system.

No carcinogens. Mojo liquid pipe cleaner does not contain any known or suspected carcinogens.

No petroleum products. It seems like a no brainer, why would petroleum products be in a cleaning solution, right? You may be surprised to know that many cleaning products and solvents are made from chemicals that come from petroleum such as: propylene, methanal, benzene, butadiene, ethanol, formaldehyde and glycol.

No Alcohol. A lot of cleaning products listing alcohol as an ingredient contain Isopropyl alcohol, which comes from fossil fuels (petroleum refining, natural gas or even coal). It is easily absorbed through the skin and is twice as toxic as ethanol.  The vapor is highly flammable and should be kept away from heat. Side effects from inhaling the vapor include: dizziness, nausea, vomiting, headaches and in large doses can lead to poisoning.

Non-Flammable. It seems like all pipe and bong cleaning solutions should non-flammable, but some cleaners containing Isopropyl alcohol or d-limonene which are highly flammable and require special handling and storage.

Non-Abrasive. Abrasive cleaning formulas can leave scratches and marks on your smoking device. Additionally your glass pipes and bongs can become dull and harder to clean over time.

Readily biodegradable.  Readily biodegradable substances have passed certain specified screening tests for ultimate biodegradability; these tests are so stringent that such compounds will be rapidly and completely biodegraded in a wide variety of aerobic environments.

Non-toxic. This is really a meaningless term. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) does not define the term “non-toxic”. The term non-toxic only implies that a product, substance, or chemical will not cause adverse health effects, either immediately or over the long-term. However, there are no specific standards or verifications for the “non-toxic” claim.  More detailed information on toxicity can be found at the EPA website:

No EPA and DEA Priority Pollutants. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Priority Pollutants, are a part of The Clean Water Act. They list chemicals by their individual names making them easier to test for safety. The (DEA) Drug Enforcement Agency has a list of chemicals that have restricted uses.
